UPDATE: Microsoft Offers Full Refund To Overcharged XBOX Live Member
>> From consumerist.com:
XBOX Live member ForceTrainer writes in with an update about his issue with Microsoft. In our last episode, ForceTrainer has been charged $50 for 2 months of a XBOX Live gold membership-- the price of a year of service.
"I spoke with James in their escalated support for about 20 minutes. Right off the bat he explained to me what MS would be able to do, and I was offered the option of a full refund of the amount that I paid or they would provide me with a 12-month XBOX Live Gold membership code that I could redeem. I opted for the full refund since all I wanted originally was to downgrade to a Silver membership.
After getting that cleared up, James asked me to explain the entire situation to him, and I gave him the story pretty much verbatim from what I sent to the Consumerist. When I finished James apologized for the confusion that occurred, and he explained a few things including why he thinks the situation occurred: - His first comment was that I was absolutely right that I should have received a full credit for the time paid for (vindication!). - My case should have been escalated by default when I first spoke to billing because my request and situation were non-standard. My account was in a decline state which the billing department can handle, but since I wanted to downgrade to a Silver account while in a decline state I should have been escalated immediately. - James believes that the major confusion occurred because my annual account was in a decline state, and that it is very rare for a billing CSR to deal see. Decline states are common with accounts paid on a monthly basis (which makes sense), and the CSR treated my annual account like it was a month-to-month. With month-to-month billing if you get declined your payment to bring your account current gets you paid for that month. Basically you're just paying for time that you've already used. However, with the annual membership, when you pay your balance there is time that is owed to you. The CSR that I spoke with just pretty much screwed this part up."
Microsoft: iPhone Xbox Live Apps Must Be Free
>> From wired.com:
Microsoft has officially halted the distribution of all Xbox Live-related iPhone applications via Apple's App Store -- not to quell creative coding, but instead to mandate that all such programs must be offered to users free of charge.
The creators of an application dubbed "1337pwn Friends List" that allows users access to their Xbox Live Friends List via Apple's multi-function handheld revealed the news this morning, as per a recent conversation they had with Microsoft's developer relations department.
Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: WT and Rock Rev Instrument Compatibility
>> From the Xbox PR Blog:
I was forwarded a link to an article on the Playstation Blog this morning that stated Sony has announced that all of the instruments in three upcoming music games (Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution) will be compatible with each other.
At the bottom a Gamasutra article about the blog post it stated: "Similar music game peripheral enforcement has yet to be enacted (or at least officially announced) on the Xbox 360 platform."
For the record, we also do that, so consider this an official announcement. All the instruments from Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution will be cross-compatible. In other words, welcome to the party. ;)
Crytek: PS4 and Xbox '720' in 3 to 4 years
>> From eurogamer.net:
Crytek boss Cevat Yerli reckons Microsoft and Sony will release new consoles in three or four years' time.
"The PlayStation 4 and Xbox '720' will arrive in 2011 or 2012, we think," said Yerli during the Games Convention Developer Conference in Leipzig, watched by GamesIndustry.biz. "But this is just our estimate - we don't know. And even if Microsoft and Sony told us, I couldn't say because it would be under NDA. "But we think in three to four years' time, although there are good reasons why it should be 2010 already...but we'll see," he added.
Xbox 360 Blu-ray Support Edges Closer?
>> From spong.com:
Microsoft is set to enable Windows users to burn Blu-ray discs directly from their desktop, potentially signalling a shift in attitude towards the format.
The feature will be part of the Windows Feature Pack for Storage, which is currently in beta testing. An update on Microsoft's Connect website for developers tells us, "This feature enables the Windows platform to do master style optical burning on Blu-Ray media."
The move could signal a more general shift in attitude towards Blu-ray on Microsoft's part. Indeed, it could be the first step towards the oft-rumoured addition of Blu-ray support for the Xbox 360.
Microsoft Charges you 50 USD for 2 Months of LIVE
>> From consumerist.com:
XBOX Live member ForceTrainer says that after he forgot to update his credit card information, Microsoft shut down his XBOX Live account. He was fine with this, but when he tried to update his info, pay his balance, and convert his account to silver, Microsoft demanded he pay an entire year's fee to settle the two months he was delinquent. The Divnich Tapes: Xbox 360's July Disappoinment
>> From gamasutra.com:
The biggest story this month is clearly in the hardware category, with all the major consoles posting lower than expected results. For today, we will specifically analyze the Xbox 360, as it posted one of the most disappointing results of the year.
So, why all the fuss about July's performance? Because analysts like myself expected a lot more. Our reasoning behind it was -- at the time -- logical. Price cuts typically increase sales 20-30 percent in the short-term, but we reasoned that because this was a "temporary" offer, consumers would rush to retailers to get an Xbox 360 before inventory ran dry.
This is exactly what happened, but, in hindsight, we forgot to take into consideration a few crucial factors.
First, this was a clearance sale on only the Pro model, which means that consumers who planned to purchase the Elite model would not likely be enticed by this offer.
Those who had planned to buy an Arcade model in July, however, were likely attracted by the offer. But keep in mind that this does not add more Xbox 360 sales -- it only shifts market share between the models.
We were right when we speculated a 20-30 percent increase in short-term sales; however, we applied that to overall sales when we should have just applied it to the Pro model market share. Working it out, mathematically, adds a little more clarity.
60GB Xbox 360 Reaches Australia Today
>> From palgn.com.au:
The newly revised Xbox 360 Pro console will be hitting Australian retailers today, following on from its recent release in Europe and North America.
The price of the new Pro console won't change, with it still coming in at a recommended retail price of $499. The unit still comes with all the stuff in the old model - headset, ethernet cable, HD AV cable and, of course, a controller. The pricing of the Elite and Arcade bundles won't change either, remaining at $349 and $649 respectively.
What Happened to the Xbox 360’s IPTV?
>> From brutalgamer.com:
Gamers first heard of the intriguing service that the Xbox 360 was going to offer all the way back in January 2007. At the time it was seen as a first for consoles and a very innovative step forward in the home console market but now Playstation have their own method for delivering television to the living room.
So just where did the console's IPTV go? IPTV was supposed to allow Xbox 360 users the ability to watch and record television on their console, as well as simultaneously allowing recording and gaming. The service was meant to launch Fall 2007 but never materialized.
Towards the end of 2007 there was at least some help for people in the United Kingdom. British Telecom announced a partner ship with Microsoft which would see BT's Fusion television service available to 360 users who currently had a Fusion subscription. Fusion is essentially BT's anwser to TiVo or Sky+ and allows subscribers to record and view television content as well as granting access to Video-On-Demand.
Cineplex big screens available to Xbox gamers
>> From cbc.ca:
Cineplex Entertainment is renting out downtime at its theatres to video gamers looking to play their Xbox 360 titles on a giant screen.
Beginning on Friday, gamers will be able to book two-hour sessions at 29 Cineplex theatres across the country [Canada] for $179 plus taxes. Up to 12 people will be allowed into the session to play their own games, or those from a supplied library, on the theatre's giant screen with surround sound. The Xbox 360, however, can only accommodate four players at a time.
Is the Xbox Portable Just a Pipe Dream?
>> From mobilemag.com:
At this point, it seems unlikely that we'll be seeing an Xbox Portable any time soon. Even so, we can go ahead and pursue this pipedream, just for the sake our own imagination and curiosity. What form factor would be the most appropriate for an Xbox Portable?
Some combination of the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP would probably be the best, I think. You can map the standard Xbox controller on the bottom half, and then have a large widescreen display that flips up in a clamshell kind of way. In the center of the controller portion, you could have a touch-sensitive section that adjusts to the current situation, like the Motorola E8. I don't think a touchscreen is needed, nor is a full QWERTY keyboard. This is a gaming machine, not a messenger.
Not that it matters. I don't think Microsoft is going to grace us with an Xbox 360 Portable. Prove me wrong, Redmond. Prove me wrong.
Microsoft Enviroment video reveals datacenter server numbers - Xbox LIVE?
>> From vgwatchdog.com:
Have you ever wondered how Microsoft provide those services for you? XBOX LIVE for instance surely must need more horsepower than a general website would need, wouldnt it? :) It's probably safe to bet that all of Microsoft's online operations doesn't run off a single server in the basement of Gates' house. However, a recent promotional video produced by Microsoft's Environmental Sustainability group may have accidentally spilled the beans.
Some quick stats: 15 datacenters hosting 148,357 servers sitting on 17,406 racks consuming 72,500KW of utility power as of the end of January 2008 (as indicated by the bar chart).
On the same page there's also an interesting graph showing the distribution of servers per "property". Live Search is in the clear lead with approximately 75,000 (50%) of the servers pushing out those less-than-desirable search results, followed by Hotmail. The other notable property occupying a large chunk of the servers would be "other" (appropriately named), which one could assume be dedicated to XBOX Live services and the like.
Japan: Xbox 360 outsells PS3 2.5-to-1
>> From edge-online.com:
Microsoft's Xbox 360 scored a notable victory in Japan during the week ended August 10, shifting almost 25,000 units to outsell the PS3 2.5-1.
The console's jump in popularity - it sold 5,359 units the previous week - was no doubt fueled by the release of Namco Bandai's Tales of Vesperia, which debuted at No4 in the software chart after selling 108,000 copies.
Xbox 360 Experiencing 'Stagnant' Demand, says Pachter
>> From gamedaily.com:
Following the NPD's July video game sales data, which revealed just a bit over 200,000 units sold for Microsoft's Xbox 360, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has proclaimed demand for the platform to be "stagnant." Rumors have swirled that Microsoft is preparing to cut prices across its hardware SKUs - a move that UBS analyst Ben Schachter believes would have a "significant impact."
Pachter commented, "Xbox 360 hardware sales were again lighter than we expected, indicating that Microsoft may be experiencing stagnant demand. The company cut the price of its Xbox 360 Pro (20GB) by $50 to $299 in July, but demand remained fairly flat. We do not expect a significant bump in August with the release of the new Pro 60GB at $349. We expect Microsoft to reconsider its pricing strategy, especially if sales of the Xbox 360 continue to lag sales of the PS3."
Microsoft Responds To July NPD Sales
>> Microsoft's reply to the July NPD sales via kotaku.com.au:
July was a solid month for Xbox 360. We dominated the E3 landscape, took home 11 Game Critics Awards and closed out a profitable year with $2.1 billion in growth in our Entertainment & Devices Division (Microsoft internal data).
Just this week, G4TV, unveiled its fan-voted G-Phoria Award winners for 2008 and G4's audience made it emphatically clear that Microsoft offers the most impressive gaming lineup in the industry, naming Xbox 360 Console of the Year, "Halo 3" the overall Game of the Year, and "Mass Effect" the Best Role-Playing Game of the Year. "Halo 3" earned an additional four nominations in the Best Shooter, Best Online Multiplayer Game, Longest Lasting Game, and Best Downloadable Content categories.
Overall, Xbox 360 garnered the most honorees with 15, followed by the Playstation 3's 14, while Nintendo's Wii offered only four winning titles. The Xbox 360's strengths were apparent as it was the only platform to offer all five nominees in the Best Downloadable Content category, and four nominees (including the winners) in both the Best Online Multiplayer and Best Shooter categories.
And we're projecting 2009 will be even bigger - we'll sell more consoles, sell more games, and continue to grow our online community at Xbox LIVE.
The NPD Group issued its July 2008 sales data today showing Xbox 360 as the current generation leader in consumer spend, game sales and software attach rate. Here is a snapshot:
· Since its launch, consumers have spent more than $10.4 billion on the Xbox 360 platform in the U.S., capturing 49% of share. (July NPD data) · 205,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold in July. (July NPD data) · Xbox 360 titles accounted for $129 million, or 34% share, in game sales in July. Of that, Xbox 360 generated $121 million at retail for third-party publishers, or 42% of share. (July NPD data) · Xbox 360 games accounted for four of the top ten games in July. (July NPD data) · Xbox 360 has a record-setting attach rate of 7.9 games per console, the highest attach rate in history for a console at this point in its lifecycle. (July NPD data)
The announcements we made at E3 come to life beginning this fall with the new Xbox experience which will evolve and deepen the experience for hardcore gamers while inviting a whole new audience to come and play. Couple that with our exclusive partnership with Netflix and a blockbuster games library boasting more than 1,000 titles including "Lips," "You're in the Movies" and Best Action Game of E3 "Gears of War 2" (Game Critics Awards), and Xbox 360 is on track to deliver a record-breaking holiday and keep the momentum going into 2009.
Note: In the US the PS3 sold 224900 units [MGS4], Xbox 360 sold 204800 units and the Wii sold 555000 units in July.

Warner Music Announces Music Video Agreement for LIVE
>> From the press release:
Warner Music Group (NYSE: WMG) today announced that it will make its music videos available to Microsoft's Xbox LIVE community around the world.
Beginning this week, more than 12 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide can download music videos by featured WMG artists from Xbox LIVE Marketplace and watch them on their Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system. The music videos will be from WMG's world-renowned roster of artists including Cute is What We Aim For, Death Cab For Cutie, Flo Rida, Matchbox Twenty, Panic! At the Disco and T.I. among others.
In making the announcement, Larry Mattera, Senior Vice President, Digital Sales & Marketing, WEA Corp., WMG's U.S. retail sales and marketing company, said, "Xbox 360 has been an important partner in our efforts to offer consumers more ways to experience our artists' music and this is especially true among gamers who are some of the most passionate music fans. With this agreement, we can take advantage of Microsoft's music platform and provide gamers what they want: music videos from their favorite artists that can be downloaded quickly and easily."
In the coming weeks and months the WMG offering on Xbox LIVE will continue to grow. "We've expanded on the strength of our gaming platform with new entertainment experiences," said Xbox LIVE Sr. Group Product Manager, Peter Orullian. "We're excited to offer WMG music videos to our 12 million members around the world as we continue to evolve our music presence."
Xbox LIVE already offers much more than its great game line-up, providing its members with movies, TV episodes, and ways to stay connected with the global community. And coming this fall, Microsoft will introduce a new Xbox experience that will reinvent home entertainment from the inside out, changing the way people stay in touch and enjoy the best entertainment content. The addition of WMG music provides strategic growth for both partners, while giving consumers more entertainment options.
Microsoft about Web-based XBLA Interface
>> From developmag.com:
Broad details about Microsoft's further plans for its new Xbox 360 dashboard were relayed to developers at the UK Gamefest event in London last week, Develop understands.
One session about Marketplace sales and content explained that Microsoft is readying a web-based interface to the online store (which sells DLC, Xbox Live Arcade Games, and also movies) that is currently only accessible via the console interface.
Via the new storefront users will be able to browse available Xbox 360 content from their computer - either at home or work - which will be then be 'sent' to their console as a download. (Presumably, the system requires the console to be in a sleep mode and utilises the on-board download manager to work.)
With the Marketplace having a web-based counterpart, Microsoft told assembled developers that it will be possible for them to virally promote their games via links on the web. The same features are also expected to be available to indie developers using the XNA Creators Club channel when that launches with the new Xbox 360 dashboard update later this year.
Rivet 1.2 adds Aperture sharing for Xbox 360
>> From macnn.com:
Cynical Peak has released a new update to Rivet, its Mac software for the Xbox 360. The app lets users stream music, photos and videos to a 360 console, which normally requires the use of a PC and Windows Media Player.
The new version of the software adds support for Apple's photo workflow software, Aperture, which can now share library photos automatically, triggering updates in Rivet whenever files are added or deleted. Cynical has also fixed problems with media parsing, particularly for iTunes libraries, and a separate "silent quit" error. The software costs $19 and requires Mac OS X 10.5.
